An academic conference this month will explore issues related to innovation, research and competition in the European Union, addressing topics such as 5G, big data, patents and standards.
On 29-30 May, the conference ‘Innovation, Research and Competition in the EU: The Future of Open and Collaborative Standard Setting’ will take place in Brussels, in the building of the Federation of Enterprises in Belgium. The conference is organised by the Liege Competition and Innovation Institute (LCII) and Tilburg Law and Economics Centre (TILEC).
The conference offers a forum for debate on issues in standard essential patents licensing and standard setting at the intersection with competition law. The programme also covers big data and standard setting, patent litigation in the telecommunications sector and fair, reasonable and non-discriminatory (FRAND) licensing terms. The roundtables will deal with standard essential patents licensing for 5G and global competition amongst standard-setting organisations.
The panels consist of academia, experts from European institutions and private practice. The conference will gather public officials, industry experts, legal practitioners and academics from universities such as Stanford, Berkeley, Tilburg, Liege and Eindhoven.
