A study in the New England Journal of Medicine found that the 40 years since the Bayh-Dole Act allowed US universities to patent and exploit publicly funded research, have led to approval by the Food and Drug Administration of more than 150 drugs and vaccines.

“The boundaries between the roles of the public and private sectors have shifted substantially since the dawn of the biotechnology era, and the public sector now has a much more direct role in the applied-research phase of drug discovery,” it said.
